Old New York: P.J. Clarke’s

We had dinner Tuesday night with Mr. Downey at an absolute treaure of Old New York: P.J. Clarke’s. At 55th Street and Third Avenue, P.J.’s has long been an upper midtown favorite for the advertising and publishing industries that lurk nearby. It’s a great and happily authentic pub whose style has been mimicked to the nth degree across the country. The bartenders are friendly, the burgers, oysters, Calimari and shoestring onions are all fabulous. The music, too, is classic, ranging from Frank to the Boss to the best of Motown. Sick.

P.J.’s has had a turn in the best show currently on television, too. When “Mad Men’s” Peggy Olson needs a place to celebrate after her first advertising copy is accepted, she and the other women of Sterling Cooper head to P.J.’s. Here’s a phenomenal map, via Grid Skipper, of the New York of “Mad Men.”
